Community doulas provide essential, non-medical support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Their work is part of a long tradition of caregiving—often unrecognized—that uplifts parents and communities. Today, they are essential partners in maternal care, connecting families to medical, cultural, and emotional resources that improve birth experiences and outcomes.
In New Jersey, community doulas are leading the charge for change, challenging a system that continues to fail Black and under-resourced communities.
Their work is deeply personal and often invisible—resulting in the work being underfunded, underpaid, and undervalued. By recognizing and supporting their efforts, we can all play a role in creating a better future for birthing people and families.
